Democracy 101

PARLIAMENT 101 - Tutor: Tracey Martin

Find out about our system of government, what Parliament does, how we choose our members of Parliament, and how laws are made. Discover the important jobs people do in Parliament and what special rules, privileges, and powers apply.

Why is New Zealand considered one of the outstanding international examples of a democracy?  Why do delegations from all over the world come to see our democracy in action?  What countries have asked us to help them with their democracy?

Much parliamentary business is about making new laws and amending old laws. The House examines and amends bills (proposed laws) in several formal stages. Once a bill has passed through all its parliamentary stages it becomes an Act of Parliament, forming part of New Zealand’s law.

New Zealand has no single written constitution or any form of law that is higher than laws passed in Parliament.  But how does a law get to be made?  Who thinks them up?  Who gets a say in what those laws are?

Join Tracey Martin MP, who states:

When I first went to parliament I discovered that hardly anyone  in my community knew how laws were made and the House of Representatives worked – even me! But what I have come to learn is that we are one of the most respected democracies in the world.  This course is not about any political party or their policies.  This course is about our democracy and our parliament.  I will be asking current MPs from the other three major parties, National, Labour and the Greens to attend at least one session during the course to answer questions – not about policy but about process.  How did they get selected as a Candidate?  How does their caucus decide on a position on a bill?  How do they get a members bill into the ballot?  How can they help their local community?  How did they get selected as a Candidate? You may be interested in getting a law made, changed or even eliminated, so why not figure out the best way to do that, by the people who get to do it on a daily basis.

Up Cycle your Clothes

Upycle your Clothes. Tutor: Debbie Hodder

UPCYCLING! What the heck is that?

Upcycling is turning Old Clothes into New Fashion.

Upcycling is not recycling. We are not taking it back to its raw state and making something new (ie: melting down milk bottles to make a jacket). We are transforming existing garments into other garments. Do you have a favourite skirt that doesn’t fit any longer? We can breathe new life into it. Got a favourite garment from when you were a child? We could incorporate that into a wearable piece. Want to transform the beautiful fabric that was used in your wedding dress into something special that you can wear now (without looking like a bride)? We can do that.

Upcycling has many advantages:

  • Cost effective

  • Eco-factor

  • Helps clear out your wardrobe of unwearable garments

  • Makes it possible to enjoy sentimental pieces once more

  • Create something unique and stand out from the crowd

Upcycling class will cover:

  • Discussion of fabric quality and usability

  • Basic construction and deconstruction techniques

  • Discovering your own “style”

Upcycling class will require:

  • Your own sewing machine

  • Very basic sewing skills and the ability to turn on your own machine and sew a straight line

  • An enthusiastic attitude

  • A garment of your own that you would like to “revive” OR

  • A garment from the Hospice or 2nd hand shop that catches your eye, but is not “quite right”

Class duration: 4 x 2hr classes

Class cost: $60* plus any extra expenses for trims/notions and/or a 2nd hand garment to work on if you don’t have anything at home. Recommended extra expenses to be less than $20.

*Cost subject to change depending on class numbers

You will leave with:

  • New skills

  • New ideas

  • New friends

  • New clothes (most likely to a value greater than or equal to the cost of the class)

Warning: Upcycling can become addictive, save money and make you look and feel fabulous!
